COERR Mae Sot Organized Community Problem Analysis Training

COERR Mae Sot organized the community problem analysis in Ban Nupo camp on May 16, 2019 in which 43 refugees attending including 35 female and 8 male. The objectives of the training are to have participants discovered the problems occurred in their own community, to realize the core of the problems and finally, to analyze the impact of these problems.

The Problem Tree Analysis activity was used to have the trainees draw a tree which represented the community, and the trunk of the tree represented the core of the problem. After that the trainees brainstormed to find out and identify what are the problems occurred in the community that compared to the roots of the tree.

Participants of the training were divided into groups. Each group drew a tree that compared to the community. The members of the group brainstormed about the problems that existed in their community. Then each group sent one representative to report the result of the group’s brainstorming.

Tree of Conflicts is a tool appropriate for group discussion, especially for the community development workers as it helps to identify conflict issues occurring in the community.

The Jo-Hari Window was used by Joseph Luft and Harry Ingham to classify human personality into 4 windows, i.e.: 1)the Open Area – Information about yourself that you and others know, 2)Blind Area-Information about yourself that you don’t know but that others do know, 3)Hidden Area-Information about yourself that you know but others don’t know, 4)Unknown Area-Information about yourself that neither you nor others know. ((PSYCYE TU)

In summary, the Open Area is the area opens for others’ comments, that we are able to change and improve our personality. The blind areas are what we are not aware so we should minimize this part as it does not help to improve our personality; the Hidden Area is where we hide from others thus it does not help us to improve as well; the unknown area is neither known to us nor others and there is no improvement.

Therefore, we should learn to understand ourselves and understand the others, in order to improve our personality and relationship with others.

In conclusion, we have learned from the Jo-Hari Windows that the more we open ourself to others and listen to their comments, the more we improve our behavior and relationship with others. The Jo-Hari Window can also benefits business. It helps the entrepreneur to develop his confidence and to solve the problems with others concerned, such as customers, distributors, officials, opponents, etc.

He may use the Jo-Hari Window’s concepts to build strategies and solve his problems. For example the entrepreneur may open his plan to the banker but should not open much to his opponents.

The Jo-Hari Window also helps entrepreneur to analyze his opponents’ strengths and weakness, then he has advantage in negotiations and opportunity to be the winner.

From the participants’ reflections: they benefited much from this training as they have had a tool that help them to identify problems occurred in the camp; they have learned about their strengths from other participants; they have told their strengths and weakness or hidden secret to others that made them relief with satisfacton. Finally, they felt it was good to have a chance to discuss the problems with others who are in the same situation.
